Subject: A Respectful Appeal for Accessible Passport Renewal Services for Sierra Leoneans in the Diaspora
Your Excellency, Honourable Ministers, Honourable Members of Parliament, and Distinguished Public Officials,
I respectfully write as a concerned Sierra Leonean living abroad to draw attention to the challenges many citizens in the diaspora continue to face when renewing their Sierra Leonean passports.
While seeking clarification on passport renewal procedures in the United States, I found no clear indication that Sierra Leoneans can complete the entire renewal process, including biometric capture, application processing, tracking, and passport collection, through the Embassy of Sierra Leone in Washington, D.C. This apparent gap continues to create uncertainty, inconvenience, and unnecessary hardship for many citizens overseas.
I wish to acknowledge the progress made by the Sierra Leone Immigration Department through the introduction of its online passport application system. The platform enables applicants to initiate applications, purchase vouchers, upload supporting documents, track their applications, and book biometric appointments. This represents an important step toward modernizing passport services.
However, the key concern remains whether Sierra Leoneans abroad can complete the entire renewal process without having to travel home or depend on relatives, friends, or third parties. For many, renewing a passport remains costly, time-consuming, and stressful despite the availability of online services.
Several African countries have already established efficient passport renewal systems for their citizens abroad. Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya, for example, provide passport renewal services, including biometric enrolment, through their embassies and approved centres in the United States. These examples demonstrate that such a system is both practical and achievable.
I therefore respectfully appeal to the Government of Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Sierra Leone Immigration Department, Parliament, and our diplomatic missions abroad to consider extending full passport renewal services to Sierra Leoneans living overseas.
Our embassies and high commissions should be equipped to facilitate biometric capture, document verification, payment guidance, application tracking, and passport collection or delivery. A Sierra Leonean residing in the United States, for instance, should have a clear and official pathway to renew an expired or expiring passport through the Embassy in Washington, D.C., or another approved consular arrangement.
This appeal is not intended as criticism but as a constructive call for improvement. Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora continue to make significant contributions to national development through remittances, investment, education, advocacy, and family support. They deserve a passport renewal system that reflects their importance and respects their time, dignity, and citizenship.
The online passport application system is a commendable beginning. The next step should be ensuring that passport renewal services are fully accessible to Sierra Leoneans wherever they reside.
I sincerely hope this appeal will receive thoughtful consideration in the interest of improving public service delivery for Sierra Leoneans in the diaspora.
Thank you for your attention to this important national matter.
Yours faithfully,
Christiana Lansana
