Freetown, Sierra Leone – May 2, 2025 The Academic & Career Advisory, Counseling, and Student Complaints Services (ACACSC) of the University of Sierra Leone has issued a health advisory urging students to take strict precautionary measures following a significant rise in Mpox (Monkeypox) cases across the country.
According to health authorities, as of May 1, 2025, Sierra Leone has recorded 1,140 confirmed cases, with 837 currently active and 88 new infections reported. Most cases have been concentrated in Western Urban and Western Rural, where many students and their families reside.
Precautionary Measures for Students
The University of Sierra Leone has outlined key preventative guidelines to minimize the spread of Mpox within the academic community:
- Practice good hygiene by washing hands frequently with soap and water or using hand sanitizer.
- Avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms such as rashes, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.
- Refrain from sharing personal items including towels, clothing, or bedding.
- Wear face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces.
- Seek medical attention immediately at the University Clinic or nearest health center if experiencing Mpox-related symptoms.
- Follow official health advisories from the National Public Health Authority, government media outlets, and university directives without delay.

In response to the outbreak, the University of Sierra Leone has reassured students of its commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment, urging full compliance with health guidelines to prevent further spread. “Your health and safety are our priority.
