Rabat, Morocco – May 10, 2025 – Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Morocco, His Excellency Alhaji Momodu Koroma, has met with Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Dr. Leila Benali, to explore enhanced bilateral cooperation in energy transition and sustainable development.
The meeting, held at Dr. Benali’s office in Rabat on Friday, focused on knowledge exchange and institutional collaboration in renewable energy, rural electrification, and sustainable mineral management. Both parties discussed the establishment of a formal cooperation framework aimed at environmental protection and sustainable growth.
Additionally, discussions highlighted Morocco’s flagship initiatives under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, including the Africa-Atlantic Gas Pipeline and the broader Africa-Atlantic Initiative, which seek to foster regional integration and sustainable development across Africa.
Ambassador Koroma called for the activation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Sierra Leone and Morocco in Dakhla on energy cooperation, involving the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE). He invited officials from both institutions to visit Sierra Leone for an on-ground assessment and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s interest in participating in the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project.
Recalling Sierra Leone’s signing of the MoU for the gas pipeline project on December 5, 2022, in Rabat, the Ambassador emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to tackling the global energy crisis and supporting transformative developments in the region.
The estimated $25 billion African gas pipeline is expected to supply energy to approximately 340 million people and significantly reduce gas flaring across the continent.
Sierra Leone and Morocco continue to maintain strong bilateral ties, with Ambassador Koroma pledging to further strengthen collaboration for mutual benefit.
