The management of Leone Rock Metal Group, a major mining company in Sierra Leone, has denied recent media claims suggesting plans to lay off workers without full severance compensation. Senior company officials refuted the allegations, dismissing them as baseless and inaccurate.

Leone Rock Metal Group has maintained a strong corporate presence in Sierra Leone, with an outstanding record in corporate social responsibility. The company recently marked a significant milestone with the launch of a new 10-million-ton iron ore processing plant, inaugurated by President Julius Maada Bio. The facility, situated in Tonkolili, forms part of Leone Rock’s substantial $1 billion investment in the country, aimed at bolstering Sierra Leone’s mining infrastructure and economic development.

Since commencing operations in 2021, Leone Rock has made significant strides in expanding its investment in the Tonkolili district, creating employment opportunities for over 8,000 individuals, with approximately 90% of positions occupied by local workers. In addition to employment, the company has established a robust energy infrastructure, generating 150 MW of power at its sites, including 43 MW from solar energy.

The company’s contribution to the national economy extends beyond job creation. Leone Rock has paid over US$10 million in taxes to the government within the last year alone, reinforcing its commitment to Sierra Leone’s financial stability. Moreover, under progressive mining laws, Tonkolili communities have benefited from US$6 million through a community development fund over the past four years. The fund has supported crucial local projects, including improvements in water supply systems, school construction, and advancements in agriculture.

The newly inaugurated processing plant is expected to enhance Sierra Leone’s mineral export revenue, strengthening the nation’s mining sector and economic growth. As the company continues its operations, Leone Rock reassures the public that its commitment to responsible business practices remains unwavering.
