Gento Group Rejects SLMMDC Claims, Asserts Lawful Lease over Tonkolili North

By Sallieu S. Kanu

Freetown, Sierra Leone – June 6, 2025: The Gento Group of Companies has strongly refuted recent claims made by the Sierra Leone Mines and Minerals Development Corporation (SLMMDC) regarding the Tonkolili North Iron Ore deposit in Kasafoni. In a press statement issued on June 5, 2025, the Group described SLMMDC’s public notice as “defamatory and misleading,” insisting that it has lawfully secured surface rights to the land under Sierra Leone’s legal framework.

Legal Basis for Land Lease Agreement

The Group clarified that it holds a valid land lease agreement signed with the Paramount Chiefs and landowners of Sambaia, Dansogoia, and Diang Chiefdoms, the rightful custodians of the Kasafoni area. This lease, according to Sierra Leone’s Mines and Minerals Development Act of 2022, is a prerequisite for obtaining a large-scale mining license.

A letter from the three Paramount Chiefs, formally submitted to the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, affirmed the agreement, highlighting Gento’s credibility, transparency, and respectful engagement with the local communities.

“We the custodians of the land, along with our people, have unanimously agreed to lease our land to Gento Group,” the letter stated.

Concerns Over SLMMDC’s Public Notice

The Group condemned SLMMDC for publicly discrediting its legal standing without prior consultation, calling the move unprofessional and disruptive to private sector participation in Sierra Leone’s extractives industry.

“At no point did SLMMDC attempt to address any overlapping claims or disputes through dialogue or due process,” Gento stated, urging SLMMDC to retract its misleading notice to restore investor confidence in Sierra Leone’s legal and regulatory environment.

Commitment to Lawful Mining & Development

While Gento Group acknowledged that it has not yet obtained a large-scale mining license, it reiterated its commitment to following all legal procedures under national mining laws. The company also expressed openness to lawful partnerships, provided they respect its land lease agreement.

“We remain confident in the rule of law and the support of genuine stakeholders dedicated to integrity, development, and private sector-led growth in Sierra Leone,” the company stated.

Gento Group reaffirmed its dedication to responsible mining and community engagement, positioning itself as a key factor in Sierra Leone’s mining sector.
