Dear Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella
I was pleased to hear from you on Radio Democracy 98.1 FM the morning of July 9, 2025, and appreciate your commitment to return to the office and investigate the root causes of the electricity issue at Devil Hole.
As you may know, this concern has been the focus of advocacy for the past four years, ever since transformers were installed but never connected to supply electricity to households. Some of the transformers are still hanging and unused.
While we await your feedback, I encourage you to seek a briefing from your colleague Edmond B Nonie, who is well informed about this area. He previously assured us that last March would be a cutoff date for installation and transmission. Although that deadline was missed, I understand the internal challenges and realise such efforts are often complicated by factors beyond one’s control.
We remain hopeful. While a small minority of us who can afford it have turned to green energy, the vast majority of our people continue to suffer without access to reliable electricity. They are not asking for much, just the basics. They are ready to pay for it, and they deserve better. This isn’t just their need, it’s OUR collective need. While we’ve heard many promises from public officials over the years regarding this issue, we believe a solution is still possible and will continue to advocate until it happens.
Warm regards,
John Baimba Sesay
Resident of Devil Hole Community
