Freetown, July 18, 2025 — A solemn civic laying-out ceremony and Book of Condolence signing were held on Friday at the Freetown City Council Hall in honor of the late Dr. Kadie Sesay, a revered academic, gender advocate, politician, and public servant.

Born on March 4, 1949, in Moyamba District, Dr. Sesay spent decades breaking barriers and championing women’s empowerment. She was the first woman to head the English Department at Fourah Bay College, served as Minister of Development and Economic Planning, and held the Trade Ministry portfolio. Her historic run as Sierra Leone’s first female vice-presidential candidate cemented her as a symbol of possibility for countless women and girls.

Tributes and Reflections

Mr. Rahman Tom Farma, Chief Administrator of the Freetown City Council, officially opened the ceremony with a moving tribute on behalf of the municipality, calling Dr. Sesay “a true daughter of the nation” whose impact on education and governance will endure.

President Julius Maada Bio paid an emotional homage, recalling Dr. Sesay as “a dear friend, intellectual force, and steadfast advocate for democracy and women’s empowerment.” He reflected on her legacy, noting that the signing of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act was one of the moments she came to mind. “She dared to stand tall. Rest well, trailblazer,” he said.

Dr. Sesay’s daughter, Ms. Isha Sesay, spoke of her mother’s unwavering commitment to both family and country, urging attendees to keep her memory alive through prayer and action.

Voices of Influence and Youth

Leading figures including Dr. Sheik Umaru Kamara and Ambassador Dr. Konah C. Koroma praised Dr. Sesay’s integrity, mentorship, and transformative influence—particularly on women in public service.

Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr described her as “a feminist, scholar, and patriot,” declaring that her legacy would continue to ignite aspirations in the next generation. “She was a beacon of hope to every girl who dares to dream,” the Mayor added.

Students from the Dr. Kadie Sesay Secondary School for Girls in Port Loko, founded in her honor, delivered a stirring tribute. Head Girl Patience B. Turay said, “She was more than a role model—she was our voice before we found our own.”

Dr. Kadie Sesay was laid to rest on Saturday at Wilberforce Village Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of brilliance, courage, and lasting change.
