U.S. Greenlights $480M Compact to Spur Sierra Leone’s Energy Revolution”

Freetown, Sierra Leone — July 24, 2025: The Government of Sierra Leone has received formal approval from the United States Government for a $480 million Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact, aimed at transforming the country’s energy infrastructure and stimulating economic growth.

Originally signed in September 2024, the Compact marks a major milestone in U.S.-Sierra Leone bilateral relations. It is designed to modernize the national power grid, enhance electricity distribution, and strengthen governance within the energy sector. Sierra Leone will contribute an additional $14.2 million to support the initiative.

The West African nation was selected as one of only 12 countries globally—and just five in Africa—to advance through a competitive MCC process involving 25 nations. This reflects growing international confidence in Sierra Leone’s economic management and institutional capacity.

Reliable electricity remains one of the country’s greatest barriers to private sector development. The Compact is expected to ease this constraint, creating fertile ground for increased U.S. and international investment, expanding job opportunities, and reinforcing long-term trade cooperation.

President Julius Maada Bio’s administration has been credited with driving the reforms that led to this success. His emphasis on sound fiscal policy, infrastructure development, and global partnerships continues to shape Sierra Leone’s reputation as an emerging investment destination.

The government expressed optimism as it prepares to move into the implementation phase, describing the Compact as a gateway to broader economic and diplomatic engagement with the United States.
