Freetown, Sierra Leone — August 4, 2025: A tragic accident in Wellington, Maxwell, along Bai Bureh Road has prompted renewed calls for road safety reform in Sierra Leone. A trailer carrying a container reportedly lost control while speeding, causing the container to fall and crush several pedestrians waiting for public transportation. The incident has left multiple families grieving and the nation in shock.
Al-Hassan Ghessay Kanu, a prominent community leader and aspirant for the All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer position in 2028, issued a heartfelt statement condemning the accident and urging immediate action to prevent future tragedies.
“Our roads have become death traps for too many innocent Sierra Leoneans—students, workers, mothers, fathers—whose only mistake was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Kanu said. “Let today be a turning point. Let the lives lost not be in vain.”
Kanu extended his condolences to the victims’ families and called for a nationwide review of transportation safety protocols.
In his statement, Kanu outlined a series of policy recommendations aimed at improving road safety:
Mandatory speed regulations for trailers and heavy vehicles.
National licensing and inspection policy for container trucks and long-distance trailers.
Designated lanes and loading zones to reduce congestion and risk in populated areas.
Public education and enforcement campaigns to curb reckless driving and restore discipline on the roads.
He emphasized that road safety is not merely a traffic issue but a matter of life and death, urging collaboration between government agencies, community leaders, transport unions, and civil society organizations.
A Nation in Mourning
The Wellington accident has reignited public concern over the state of Sierra Leone’s road infrastructure and regulatory enforcement. Citizens are demanding accountability and swift action to prevent similar incidents.
Kanu concluded his statement with a call for unity and compassion: “May God comfort the grieving families, and may we unite as a nation to prevent such tragedies from ever happening again.”
