S/Leone Braces for Heavy Rainfall: NDMA and SLMet Issue Warning

By Sallieu S. Kanu

Freetown, 7 August 2025:  The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet), has issued a public advisory warning of heavy rainfall expected across Sierra Leone between 5th and 9th August 2025.

The alert follows a regional flooding outlook jointly released by the African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). According to the forecast, rainfall levels are projected to range between 100mm and 150mm, posing a significant risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.

Sierra Leone joins a list of West and Central African nations—including Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, and Cameroon—expected to experience intense precipitation during this period.

Precautionary Measures Urged

In response to the forecast, NDMA and SLMet are urging the public to take proactive steps to minimize risk and ensure safety. Key recommendations include: Stay informed through official weather alerts broadcast via radio, television, and social media; relocate to safer or elevated areas if residing in flood-prone communities; clear gutters and waterways to prevent waterlogging and improve drainage; and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, which can be deceptively dangerous.

For emergencies, citizens are encouraged to contact the NDMA through its toll-free line – 119, accessible on all networks.

Both agencies have assured the public of continued monitoring of weather developments and pledged to issue timely updates to safeguard lives, property, and livelihoods.

This advisory underscores the importance of community preparedness and vigilance as Sierra Leone enters a period of heightened weather risk.
