Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a heartwarming gesture of solidarity and support, 198 meritorious and underprivileged Sierra Leonean students were awarded scholarships under the fourth edition of the Baba Guru Nanak Educational Scholarship Scheme. The presentation ceremony took place on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Sierra Palm Resort on Beach Road, Freetown.

Organized by Shri Gurudwara Sahid in collaboration with the Indian diaspora and generous well-wishers, the initiative continues to serve as a beacon of hope for children from vulnerable backgrounds—particularly orphans and those raised by single parents.

Each scholarship package included: School bag, copy books, water bottle, and lunch pack; NLe 6,500 in educational support and  NLe 400 cash envelope for school uniform and shoes

Delivering the keynote address, Indian High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Mr. Baisnab Charan Pradhan, praised the scholarship as a transformative gift of education. He commended the organizers for their tireless efforts to uplift disadvantaged communities and emphasized the role of education in shaping future leaders.

“Education is the bedrock of strong communities,” Mr. Pradhan stated. “This initiative breaks barriers, inspires young minds, and empowers change. I urge all well-wishers to continue their support and encourage beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies.”

Founder’s Vision and Impact

Mohinder Bir Singh Sachdeva, founder of the scholarship scheme, highlighted the deeper significance of the program beyond its monetary value.

“This scholarship is about life-changing impact,” he said. “For many parents, it represents a much-needed sigh of relief, covering a full year’s school fees and essential supplies.”

Head of the Planning Committee, Abdulai Bah, revealed that over 200 applications were received, with 198 students selected based on vulnerability and merit. He urged parents to maintain transparency and keep the committee informed about their child’s academic progress.

“This scholarship targets the most vulnerable—children of single parents, double orphans, and families in financial distress,” Bah emphasized.

Agnes Musa, a single parent and one of the attendees, expressed deep gratitude for the timely support amid economic challenges.

“This scholarship is a lifeline,” she said. “I encourage all parents to ensure their children make the most of this opportunity.”

The Baba Guru Nanak Scholarship continues to stand as a testament to compassion, community, and the transformative power of education—lighting the path for a brighter future in Sierra Leone.
