Freetown, Sierra Leone – 28 August 2025: In a groundbreaking development for Sierra Leone’s education and civic leadership landscape, Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Chernor Bah, has signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Columbia University, a leading Ivy League institution in the United States. The partnership, unveiled by Columbia University on 27 August 2025, aims to position Sierra Leone as a regional hub for excellence in global health, education, and civic engagement.

The MoU, signed on 12 August by Minister Bah and Dr. Thoai Ngo, Chair of Columbia’s Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, will create transformative opportunities for Sierra Leonean youth—students, researchers, and public officials—to access world-class training, mentorship, and collaborative research.

“Sierra Leone’s greatest resource is its young people,” Minister Bah stated. “By investing in their education and leadership today, we are building a foundation for a stronger, more prosperous, and more resilient Sierra Leone tomorrow.”

The partnership will facilitate joint initiatives addressing health inequities, civic participation, and sustainable development, while fostering platforms for evidence-based policymaking and innovation. Columbia University will contribute its global expertise in public health and development, while Sierra Leone will serve as a vibrant setting for testing solutions and expanding civic engagement.

“This collaboration shows that investing in Sierra Leone is not only vital for the country but also strategic for the region,” said Dr. Ngo. “By building capacity locally, we are helping to shape a generation of leaders who will influence policy and practice across West Africa.”

Under the agreement, Sierra Leone will host new programs aimed at strengthening governance, amplifying citizen voices, and cultivating a generation of changemakers equipped to lead in both national and international arenas.

“By partnering with Columbia University, we are creating opportunities that will transform lives for generations to come,” Minister Bah concluded. “This is how we secure Sierra Leone’s future—by investing in our youth and unlocking their limitless potential.”

The partnership marks a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s journey toward inclusive development and global leadership, with young people at the heart of the vision.
