The African Union (AU) has officially appointed Ambassador Dr. Alhaji Sarjoh Bah as its Permanent Representative to the People’s Republic of China, a move widely seen as a strategic recalibration of Africa’s diplomatic engagement with Beijing. The appointment comes at a time when China remains Africa’s largest trading partner and a key development ally.
A distinguished diplomat and scholar, Ambassador Bah hails from Sierra Leone and brings with him a formidable academic and professional pedigree. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Studies from Queen’s University in Canada, a Master of Public Administration from the University of Cape Town, and a Bachelor of Arts from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. His scholarly contributions have shaped critical discourse on regional integration, peacebuilding, and African security architecture.
Ambassador Bah’s posting to Beijing is more than ceremonial—it is deeply strategic. His mandate includes aligning Africa–China cooperation with Agenda 2063, the AU’s blueprint for inclusive and sustainable continental development. Early in his tenure, Bah has begun coordinating the AU’s response to the ten Partnership Actions announced by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the 2024 Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit. These initiatives span industrial development, digital economy, green growth, health, infrastructure, and human capital—areas where Africa seeks not just investment, but equitable collaboration.
A Veteran of Peace and Governance
With over two decades of service at the African Union Commission, Ambassador Bah has held several key positions, including Director of Conflict Management, Head of the Crisis Management and Post-Conflict Reconstruction Division, and Chief Advisor on Peace, Security, and Governance at the AU’s Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the AU’s mediation frameworks and post-conflict recovery strategies, consistently advocating for African-led solutions and institutional resilience.
Intellectual Leadership and Continental Vision
Beyond his diplomatic roles, Bah is a prolific author and policy thinker whose publications have influenced global understanding of peace operations and regional security mechanisms. He is a respected voice in multilateral forums, from New York to Addis Ababa, and continues to guide the AU’s strategic direction through his intellectual contributions.
As the AU’s chief envoy in Beijing, Bah also plays a pivotal role in coordinating the African Group of Ambassadors, ensuring that Africa presents a unified voice on the global stage.
National Honour and Continental Impact
In recognition of his distinguished service, Ambassador Bah was conferred the rank of Ambassador by His Excellency Brigadier (Retired) Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone. The honour reflects both his national contributions and his enduring impact on continental diplomacy.
Ambassador Bah’s appointment marks a new chapter in Africa–China relations, underscoring the AU’s commitment to principled, Pan-African leadership in global affairs. His presence in Beijing is expected to deepen strategic partnerships and ensure that Africa’s priorities remain at the forefront of international cooperation.
