In a historic milestone for Sierra Leone’s creative industry, renowned makeup artist and Guinness World Record holder Mary Yei Yongai has been appointed as the Honorary Global Ambassador for the New York-based International Beauty Fashion Association (IBFA). The announcement, made on September 10, 2025, marks a significant achievement for Yongai, whose extraordinary talent and dedication have propelled her to international acclaim.
Yongai first captured global attention in 2024 when she set a Guinness World Record for the most cosmetic makeovers completed in 24 hours. At Bintumani Car Park in Freetown, Yongai skillfully completed 111 makeovers, surpassing the previous record and showcasing her exceptional artistry, stamina, and commitment. The record-breaking event was more than a feat of endurance; it was a vibrant celebration of resilience, creativity, and the transformative power of pursuing one’s dreams. Yongai’s achievement resonated widely, inspiring aspiring artists across Sierra Leone and beyond.
As IBFA’s Honorary Global Ambassador, Yongai’s role is multifaceted and impactful. She is tasked with mentoring and educating the next generation of makeup artists, fostering creativity, and providing guidance to emerging talents. Additionally, she will work to build communities and forge connections across borders, creating platforms for creatives to collaborate, grow, and gain global exposure. Yongai’s appointment also emphasizes cross-cultural exchange, as she aims to bridge the gap between Sierra Leone’s burgeoning beauty industry and the global stage.
Yongai’s journey is evidence to the power of talent combined with opportunity. Born and raised in Sierra Leone, she honed her craft in a competitive industry, overcoming challenges to establish herself as a trailblazer. Her work has not only elevated Sierra Leone’s presence in the global beauty scene but also highlighted the potential for African creatives to make their mark internationally. “I have always wanted to enter the American beauty industry, and now, by God’s grace, I’m officially the Honorary Global Ambassador for the International Beauty Fashion Association based in New York. Another history has been made, and I’m honored to serve as the beauty trainer for New York Fashion Week,” Yongai said in a statement.
Her new role includes a prestigious position as a beauty trainer for New York Fashion Week, where she will share her expertise and inspire designers, models, and artists.
In addition to her makeup career, Yongai is currently a third-year student at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications with a focus on Broadcast Journalism.
