Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso — Tuesday, 16 September 2025: In a landmark diplomatic engagement, His Excellency Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, arrived in Ouagadougou for a one-day working visit, according to a statement from the State House Media and Communications Unit.
He was warmly welcomed at the Ouagadougou International Airport by Burkinabé Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
This visit marks a historic moment, as President Bio becomes the first ECOWAS Chair to visit a member state of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) since the bloc’s formation. The occasion underscores his commitment to fostering regional unity and advancing dialogue between ECOWAS and AES member countries.
During the visit, President Bio is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Captain Traoré. The leaders will discuss strategies to enhance cooperation between ECOWAS and AES, with a particular focus on regional security, stability, and deepening bilateral ties between Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso.
The meeting comes at a critical time for West Africa, as both organizations navigate complex security dynamics and seek collaborative solutions to shared challenges in the Sahel region.
President Bio’s visit follows his earlier trip to Burkina Faso in August 2025, when he served as President of the United Nations Security Council. That visit provided him with firsthand insight into Burkina Faso’s evolving security landscape and allowed for broader consultations on peacebuilding efforts across the Sahel.
His return to Ouagadougou in his ECOWAS capacity reflects a sustained commitment to regional diplomacy, inclusive dialogue, and the pursuit of lasting peace.
