Bio, Traoré Forge Path to West African Unity

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – September 16, 2025: In a significant diplomatic engagement, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, who currently chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, met with Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, to reaffirm their commitment to peace, unity, and stability across West Africa.

The bilateral meeting, held in Ouagadougou, was marked by warm camaraderie and strategic dialogue. President Bio expressed deep appreciation for the hospitality extended by Captain Traoré and emphasized that the visit symbolized solidarity with Burkina Faso, particularly as it navigates a political transition.

Drawing from his own journey from military leadership to democratic governance, President Bio underscored the importance of inclusive transitions in fostering regional stability. He noted that understanding the dynamics of such processes is vital for ECOWAS as it seeks to support member states in strengthening democratic institutions.

On regional security, President Bio voiced concern over escalating threats in the Sahel, particularly terrorism and violent extremism. He called for a robust security cooperation framework between ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), stressing that cross-border collaboration is essential to countering insecurity effectively.

Beyond security, the two leaders pledged to deepen economic ties between Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso. Both countries committed to enhancing trade and mutual investments, leveraging their unique strengths to foster sustainable development.

Captain Traoré’s engagement with the ECOWAS Chairman was described as constructive and forward-looking, reflecting a shared vision for a more integrated and peaceful West African region. The meeting is seen as a pivotal step toward closer cooperation between ECOWAS and AES member states.
