Kukuna Town, Bramaia Chiefdom — September 19, 2025:
Radio Bankhi Solofaray FM 93.7, a beacon of unity and communication for Bramaia Chiefdom and its surrounding communities, marked its first anniversary with a vibrant stakeholders’ meeting in Kukuna Town, the chiefdom’s headquarters. The celebration underscored the station’s growing role as a trusted platform for education, information, and community development.
Launched on December 20, 2024, the station has quickly become a cornerstone of local engagement. Its name, Bankhi Solofaray—meaning “seven houses”—symbolizes the unity and shared aspirations of the chiefdom’s people. Over the past year, the station has bridged communication gaps and empowered residents to participate in nation-building efforts.
In an interview with Premier News, Station Manager Abubakar Conteh recounted the station’s origins. The idea was born from a community consultation led by Father Franco of the Catholic mission, who asked locals what legacy they wished to leave behind. Their answer: a radio station to stay informed and contribute to peace and development.
“Without a local station, we were missing out on national conversations,” Conteh said. “We believed a radio station would help us engage in meaningful change.”
Under the leadership of Board Chairman Paramount Chief Kandeh Momoh Samba Sulaiman DE-Phoreh II—a seasoned journalist and former manager of Radio Kolenten—the station has flourished. His experience and ties to the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) have helped steer the station toward its mission of inclusive communication.
The anniversary celebration drew a diverse group of stakeholders, including traditional leaders, religious figures, youth groups, and representatives from neighboring Khonimakha Chiefdom. The event served as both a milestone and a forum for discussing the station’s achievements, challenges, and future plans.
Conteh acknowledged the station’s impact despite limited resources. “We’ve worked hard to make this station a true reflection of the people’s needs and aspirations,” he said. However, he also highlighted a major challenge: the lack of reliable electricity. “Energy has been our biggest struggle. Without a steady power source, it’s difficult to operate effectively.”
In response, stakeholders unanimously resolved to adopt solar energy as a sustainable solution. The move is expected to reduce operational costs and ensure uninterrupted broadcasting, reinforcing the community’s commitment to innovation and resilience.
The meeting concluded with a renewed sense of ownership and pride among residents. Many praised the station’s inclusive approach and pledged continued support. Conteh expressed deep gratitude for the solidarity shown, calling the anniversary a turning point.
“We are not just a radio station; we are a family working together for a better future,” he said, while appealing to government bodies, NGOs, and development partners for support. “Together, we can build a stronger station that serves the needs of everyone in the country.”
Radio Bankhi Solofaray’s journey reflects the power of community-driven media and the potential of grassroots initiatives to shape national progress.
