Kailahun, Sierra Leone — The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) has reported a troubling incident of theft and vandalism at its water treatment plant in Kailahun, Eastern Sierra Leone, according to SALWACO Communications Unit.

According to officials, unidentified looters broke into the facility and severely damaged the control panel cables, disrupting operations and causing significant setbacks to the company’s service delivery.

Security personnel on site attempted to intercept the intruders but were ultimately overpowered. In their haste to flee, the perpetrators abandoned personal items including mobile phones, clothing bags, and other gadgets, which are now being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Station Manager in Kailahun promptly alerted local police, and the Regional Manager for the East confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested and are assisting with inquiries. Authorities are working to identify all individuals involved and assess the full extent of the damage.

SALWACO condemned the act, describing it as a serious threat to the development of the water sector. “These kinds of activities not only sabotage our infrastructure but also worsen the challenges faced by communities relying on our services,” the company stated.

The utility provider is urging law enforcement to expedite the investigation and is calling for stronger community policing efforts to safeguard public assets. SALWACO also highlighted recent upgrades to its security and traceability systems, aimed at preventing future incidents.

The company reiterated its commitment to providing reliable water services and emphasized that acts of vandalism must be discouraged to ensure progress in national development.
