Sierra Leone – September 26, 2025: After more than two decades of transformative humanitarian and development work, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has officially closed its country programme in Sierra Leone. The organization began operations in 1999 during the height of the civil war and has since played a pivotal role in supporting the nation through crises including displacement, Ebola, cholera, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the past 26 years, the IRC has reached more than 3.5 million Sierra Leoneans with lifesaving and life-changing support. Through partnerships with government institutions, civil society, and local organizations, the IRC has helped strengthen national systems and build resilience across key sectors such as health, education, protection, and livelihoods.

Among its notable achievements, the IRC:

  • Enhanced maternal and child health services and supported national vaccination campaigns.
  • Improved literacy and numeracy, while empowering adolescent girls through education and vocational training.
  • Led efforts to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, promoting safer and more equitable communities.
  • Boosted economic recovery through financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and skills development.
  • Championed localization by partnering with national organizations including RAINBO Initiative, Defense for Children International, Falaba Women’s District Network, and MoPADA.

Mercy Alidri, IRC’s Country Director in Sierra Leone, expressed heartfelt gratitude and optimism during the announcement. “The decision to close the IRC Sierra Leone office was not taken lightly,” she said. “But after 26 years of impactful work, we are confident that strong local organizations are now leading the way—rooted in their communities and equipped to continue this mission.”

Alidri thanked IRC staff, partners, and donors for their unwavering support, noting that the legacy of the IRC will continue to shape Sierra Leone’s future. “We remain committed to the shared goals of sustainable development and improving the lives of vulnerable populations,” she added.

The IRC’s departure marks a deliberate transition, reflecting the growing capacity and leadership of Sierra Leonean institutions. While operations are concluding, the organization has pledged to maintain dialogue and explore future collaborations as needs arise.
