The University of Sierra Leone Creative and Theatre Group (USLCTG) is set to host the fourth edition of the Inter-Primary School Drama Competition (IPSDSC 2025), scheduled to take place at the Multi-Purpose Hall, Fourah Bay College (FBC) from November 4 to 6, 2025. The event aims to revive theatre culture, raise awareness about child labour, and advocate for quality education among children.

Held under the theme “Say No to Child Labour, Say Yes to Education,” this year’s competition will spotlight the urgent need to eliminate child labour and promote inclusive education as a pathway to empowerment and national development.

The elimination round will commence on November 4, with the grand finale set for November 6. Each day’s program begins at 10:00 a.m.

Bilal Jalloh, popularly known as BJ International and a key organizer of the event, emphasized the transformative power of theatre in shaping young minds. “Drama is not just entertainment — it’s one of the most powerful educational tools available,” he said. “Through this competition, we aim to amplify the voices of children and reinforce the message that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, dream, and thrive in a safe environment.”

The IPSDSC has become a cultural and educational highlight in Freetown, attracting dozens of primary schools from across the city and its environs. Pupils will present original drama pieces that explore the realities of child labour and the life-changing impact of education. Performances will be judged based on creativity, clarity of message, stage presence, teamwork, and originality.

The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 (quality education) and Goal 8 (decent work and economic growth), which advocate for the elimination of child labour in all its forms.

The grand finale is expected to draw a diverse audience, including parents, educators, child rights advocates, government officials, and community leaders. Organizers say the event will not only celebrate artistic talent but also serve as a platform to reaffirm collective commitment to protecting Sierra Leonean children.

Founded in 2020, the USL Creative and Theatre Group comprises students from Fourah Bay College (FBC), the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), and the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS). The group has produced several socially conscious plays, including the acclaimed production “The Throne” in 2022, and continues to use theatre as a bridge between academia and community transformation.

The 2025 edition of IPSDSC stands as a powerful call to action for communities, policymakers, and parents to safeguard children’s futures by keeping them in school and away from exploitative labour. Through the energy and creativity of young performers, the event promises to deliver a message that resonates far beyond the stage: education is every child’s right, and every story told is a step toward a better tomorrow.
