Sierra Leone — October 2025: Parliament has officially approved the appointment of Umar Fuad Bawoh as a board member of the Sierra Leone National Youth Commission (NYC), following his nomination by President Julius Maada Bio. The decision has been widely welcomed as a recognition of Bawoh’s longstanding commitment to youth empowerment and community development.

A respected philanthropist and youth advocate, Bawoh has spent years championing initiatives that uplift young people, promote education, and drive grassroots development across Sierra Leone. His work spans from the eastern and western regions of Freetown to rural communities in the provinces, where his social and economic projects have impacted thousands.

While many hail his appointment as well-deserved, public expectations are high. Citizens are calling for tangible results, not just symbolic recognition, especially as the country grapples with deepening youth challenges. Unemployment, limited opportunities, and the growing kush drug epidemic continue to push many young Sierra Leoneans to the margins of society.

As a board member of the NYC, Bawoh is expected to play a key role in shaping policies that offer real opportunities for youth and steer them away from drugs and despair. His leadership will be critical in designing programs that address the root causes of youth vulnerability and promote sustainable development.

Beyond youth issues, Sierra Leone is also facing rising incidents of gender-based violence (GBV). The public is looking to leaders like Bawoh to use their influence to support survivors, challenge harmful social norms, and promote safety and dignity for women and girls.

Bawoh’s appointment aligns with President Bio’s “Big Five” agenda, which prioritizes human capital development. His inclusion in the Youth Commission presents an opportunity to translate that vision into action through investments in education, skills training, and community outreach that benefit both young men and women.

Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum praised Bawoh’s track record, describing him as a diligent public servant whose work has earned the trust of the President. However, they also emphasized that his approval marks a moment of accountability.

The public now expects transparency, measurable progress, and bold leadership—especially on issues affecting the next generation. As one of Sierra Leone’s emerging public leaders, Umar Fuad Bawoh carries the responsibility of turning his reputation for service into lasting change.

With youth and women at the heart of national development, the urgency for action has never been greater.
