Stats SL Engages Eastern Region Chiefs Ahead of 2026 Census Mapping

Kenema, Sierra Leone – 17 October 2025 — Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) convened a high-level regional stakeholders’ engagement at the Kenema District Council Hall, bringing together paramount chiefs and district authorities from the Eastern Region. The meeting focused on the ongoing cartographic mapping exercise in preparation for the 2026 Population and Housing Census.

Strengthening Local Collaboration

The engagement aimed to:

  • Foster collaboration between Stats SL and traditional/local authorities
  • Promote understanding and support for the mapping process
  • Enhance community participation and awareness

Mr. Prince Quee, Stats SL Council Representative for the Eastern Region, opened the session by emphasizing the importance of sustained cooperation with local leaders to ensure the success of the census.

Securing Traditional Buy-In

Director of Censuses and GIS, Mr. Abdulai Salia Brima, highlighted the critical role of traditional authorities as community gatekeepers. He explained that the cartographic mapping exercise is essential for accurately identifying all households and settlements, laying the groundwork for a credible and inclusive census.

Chiefs Pledge Support

Paramount Chief Fayia S.B. Sovula, representing the National Council of Paramount Chiefs, pledged full support for the census initiative. Other chiefs who echoed this commitment included:

  • PC Sadie Kapuwa – Kenema District
  • PC Soloko – Kono District
  • PC Kelly Coomber – Kailahun District

They reaffirmed their readiness to mobilize communities and support the mapping and census process.

Mapping as a Foundation for Development

Statistician General, Mr. Andrew Bob Johnny, delivered the keynote address, stressing that the mapping exercise is the cornerstone of the 2026 Census. He underscored its significance for national development planning, equitable resource allocation, and evidence-based policymaking.

Stats SL Council Chairman, Mr. Moses Williams, called on traditional leaders to take ownership of the process and drive grassroots participation. Deputy Statistician General, Mr. Lansana Kpewolo Kanneh, provided a progress update and announced that the pilot census is scheduled for December 2025. He commended the government’s financial leadership and acknowledged the contributions of development partners.

Technology and Sensitization

Cartographic Consultant Dr. Foluke Adebayor showcased the use of advanced technologies in the mapping process, including satellite imagery, digital mapping tools, and field data collection systems. She confirmed that the first phase of mapping will run from October to December 2025.

To support community sensitization, Stats SL distributed megaphones, batteries, and logistical materials to sixteen paramount chiefs for use in loudhailing and awareness campaigns.

Looking Ahead

All stakeholders present reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the success of the 2026 Population and Housing Census. The engagement reinforced Stats SL’s dedication to transparency, inclusiveness, and nationwide coverage.

The next regional engagement is scheduled for the North-West Region.
