December 17, 2025: The Government of Sierra Leone has expressed concern over a new proclamation by the United States imposing full entry restrictions on Sierra Leonean nationals. The announcement, issued on December 16, 2025, moves Sierra Leone from partial to full restriction status under U.S. immigration measures.
According to the U.S. government, the expanded restrictions are linked to visa overstay rates, challenges with repatriation of removable nationals, and broader national security considerations. Sierra Leone now joins a list of countries facing heightened entry limitations.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to international cooperation and pledged to address the concerns raised by Washington. The Ministry noted that the restrictions are subject to review and confirmed that constructive dialogue with U.S. authorities is ongoing.
Officials highlighted steps already taken to strengthen document security, improve repatriation processes, and enhance information-sharing mechanisms in line with global best practices. The government assured citizens that resolving the issue remains a priority and appealed for patience as consultations continue.
The Ministry emphasized Sierra Leone’s adherence to international law and its determination to seek sustainable relief from the restrictions. It underscored that immigration and security concerns will be addressed through cooperation rather than confrontation.
The government’s response comes amid growing public anxiety over the impact of the expanded U.S. entry ban on Sierra Leonean nationals.
