RSLAF Denies Torture Allegation

Sierra Leone – January 19, 2026: The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) has dismissed a video circulating on social media claiming that Corporal Kamara, who recently killed his superior officer, was executed immediately after his arrest.

In a statement issued by Defence Public Relations Director Lieutenant Colonel Yayah Brima, the RSLAF described the video as a “prank” intended to tarnish the military’s human rights record. The army emphasized that the footage does not depict the actual circumstances surrounding Corporal Kamara’s death.

Preliminary investigations revealed that on January 14, 2026, Corporal Kamara, also known as “No. 9,” confronted his superior, Major Larkoh, and threatened his life. Witnesses reported Kamara shouting, “You are a dead man,” before firing three shots at close range. Major Larkoh died instantly.

Following the attack, Kamara attempted to take his own life. He was taken into medical custody in a critical condition and rushed to the 34 Military Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Armed Forces stressed that it does not torture personnel, regardless of the severity of their crimes. “RSLAF would never torture its personnel to death. Rather, suspects are arrested and handed over for fair trial,” the statement read.

To reinforce this point, the military cited recent cases:

In November 2023, coup leader Amadu Koita Makalo and others were arrested, tried, and convicted without being subjected to torture, despite their involvement in the killing of 18 security personnel.

In November 2025, Corporal Stevens fatally shot Warrant Officer Class 1 Moses Brima Kabba in Lungi. He was arrested after a manhunt and is currently standing trial before Principal Magistrate Mustapha Braima-Jah in Freetown.

The RSLAF pledged to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of both Major Larkoh and Corporal Kamara. The military urged the public to disregard misleading social media content and rely on official channels for accurate information.
