SLPP Chairman Faces Backlash Over Controversial Remarks

By Sallieu S. Kanu

Sierra Leone – January 2026: The National Chairman of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Jimmy Batilo Songa, has come under sharp criticism from party elders following remarks they described as unprofessional, irresponsible, and potentially damaging to the party’s reputation.

Senior figures within the SLPP told this medium that Songa’s recent comments were inconsistent with the party’s doctrines and policies, which emphasize national integration, unity, gender equality, tolerance, and respect across cultural, ethnic, and religious lines.

They argued that Songa’s declaration of being “fearless” was not a mark of leadership but rather an indication of his inability to govern effectively as National Chairman. According to them, the party requires a leadership style that unites members under one umbrella, rather than one that fuels division.

Some elders further accused Songa of laying the groundwork for a particular aspirant, whom they claim is relatively new to the SLPP. They alleged that his remarks suggest he is advancing the interests of a political “godfather” who is quietly positioning himself to become the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In his remarks, Chairman Songa stood firm, insisting that his role requires him to engage with all party members without discrimination.

“Let me be clear, no one will stop me from interacting with any SLPP member, regardless of their interests or ambitions within the party,” he stated. “Know this, I am a fearless politician and I will not allow anyone to dictate to me how to carry out my responsibilities.”

Songa emphasized that the flagbearer race has not yet begun and reiterated that his primary duty is to foster unity and mutual respect among members. He argued that effective leadership requires openness and accessibility, including interacting with members and participating in party functions.

“Our party must function effectively, and one of the key ways to achieve that is by bringing senior party members closer to the party’s administrative leadership,” he added.

Party Unity at Stake

The controversy has sparked debate within the SLPP, with elders calling for restraint and collective leadership, while Songa maintains his stance on inclusivity and fearless engagement. The incident underscores ongoing tensions within the party as it prepares for the 2028 elections.
