Choithram Surgical Mission Transforms Lives Through Reconstructive Surgeries

Freetown, Sierra Leone – February 23, 2026: A humanitarian medical outreach hosted at Choithram Memorial Hospital has delivered life-changing surgical care to dozens of patients across Sierra Leone, marking its fourth consecutive year of service. The initiative was facilitated by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Germany and supported by the Government of Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, and private-sector partners.

The two-week surgical camp, known as the Interplast Camp, ran from February 10–24, 2026, and focused on complex reconstructive procedures provided free of charge. Conditions treated included post-burn contractures, deformities of the hands, feet, and wrists, tumors affecting extremities, and cleft lip and palate repairs.

Surgical Achievements

  • A total of 44 surgeries were successfully completed this year.
  • Many operations restored mobility and function for children suffering severe burn injuries.
  • Complex tumor cases were addressed, including a challenging two-stage thumb tumor removal.
  • Corrective cleft lip and palate procedures were performed, offering renewed hope to patients.

Visiting Specialists

The mission was carried out by six visiting experts:

  • Dr. Lutz Friedbert Wolfgang Gruhl – Plastic Surgeon
  • Dr. Bernd Markus Heidemann – Hand and Trauma Surgeon
  • Dr. Olaf Günther Weigt – Anesthetist
  • Dr. Andreas Weckesser – Hand and Trauma Surgeon
  • Dr. Friedrich Johannes Goswin Matthaei – Hand and Plastic Surgeon
  • Mr. Nikolaus Brunner – Anaesthetic Nurse

Local Impact

Medical Superintendent Dr. Gowrinath M. George praised the visiting team for their professionalism and rigorous patient screening. He confirmed that all scheduled surgeries were completed with no pending cases and announced that the team has pledged to return next year with additional specialists to expand treatment capacity.

Beyond surgical care, the outreach will continue with free colon cancer screenings scheduled for March 12–13, 2026, and complimentary cataract surgeries from April 25 to May 21, 2026.

Observers have commended the initiative as a model of international collaboration and community-focused healthcare, reinforcing Sierra Leone’s commitment to improving medical services nationwide.
