Aggression: Guinean Forces Cross Border, Detain Sierra Leone Security Personnel

February 24, 2026:  The Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed a cross-border security incident involving personnel of the Guinean Armed Forces (GAF) in Kalieyereh, Sulima Chiefdom, Falaba District.

According to an official statement, on Monday, February 23, 2026, Guinean troops crossed into Sierra Leonean territory where members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and Sierra Leone Police (SLP) were deployed. At the time, Sierra Leone’s security personnel were engaged in brick-making for the construction of a border post and accommodation facility, with the national flag hoisted on recognized Sierra Leonean soil.

During the encounter, several members of the joint security team, including an officer, were apprehended and taken into Guinean territory. Their arms and ammunition were also seized.

Government officials stated that diplomatic and security channels are being actively engaged to confirm the location of the detained personnel and secure their safe and unconditional release. The matter has been formally communicated to national, regional, and sub-regional authorities, with ongoing efforts to ensure a peaceful resolution.

A fact-finding mission has been constituted to visit the area immediately to establish the sequence of events. Authorities assured the public that verified updates will be provided as the situation develops.
