Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) – Design and Rehabilitation of Pumping Stations, Rising Mains, and Reservoirs in Freetown Under the Freetown WASH and Aquatic Environment Revamping Project (WASHAERP)
The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Finance, has secured financing from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and other development partners to implement the Freetown WASH and Aquatic Environment Revamping Project (WASHAERP). The project is being implemented by the Guma Valley Water Company (GVWC) to improve water supply and sanitation services in the Western Area/Greater Freetown while safeguarding critical watershed and forest ecosystems.
The project seeks to expand and rehabilitate key water infrastructure, strengthen sanitation systems, and enhance integrated water resources management. It is expected to increase access to safe water and improved sanitation, directly benefiting approximately 1.4 million people and contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6.
In compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Act of Sierra Leone and donor safeguard requirements, GVWC has commissioned Hamosan SL Limited to undertake an Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA) for the Design and Rehabilitation of Pumping Stations, Rising Mains, and Reservoirs in Freetown.
The ESHIA will assess potential environmental and social impacts and propose mitigation measures to ensure that impacts, primarily temporary and construction related are properly managed.
As part of the ESHIA process, public disclosure meetings will be held to present the findings and obtain stakeholder and community feedback, as follows:
Hill Station Community – Wednesday, 4th March 2026
Hooke Street Community – Thursday, 5th March 2026
All community members, stakeholders, and interested parties are encouraged to attend and participate.
