Freetown, Sierra Leone – Choithram Memorial Hospital has announced a two-day colon cancer screening program scheduled for March 12–13, 2026, featuring UK-accredited colonoscopists. The initiative aims to strengthen early detection and prevention efforts in Sierra Leone.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the screening will be conducted by the Clinical Director and a specialist team from a UK bowel screening centre. The delegation includes experienced doctors and nurses trained in advanced gastrointestinal diagnostic procedures, particularly colonoscopy—a globally recognized tool for detecting colon cancer at an early stage.
During the procedures, doctors will examine the inner lining of the large intestine and, where necessary, remove polyps or adenomas. Medical experts emphasize that removing these abnormal growths significantly reduces the risk of colon cancer and improves long-term health outcomes.
Hospital management noted that the program reflects Choithram Memorial Hospital’s ongoing commitment to preventive healthcare through international collaboration and specialist outreach.
Colon cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related illness worldwide. Health professionals continue to encourage individuals, especially those over 40 or with a family history of colorectal conditions, to undergo routine screening as a proactive measure.
Due to limited availability, the hospital has advised members of the public to register early to secure appointments. For registration and inquiries, individuals can contact +232 76541331.
The upcoming screening dates present a rare opportunity for residents to access expert diagnostic services locally, reinforcing the importance of early detection and timely medical intervention in the fight against colon cancer.
