Freetown, March 18, 2026 — The Judiciary of Sierra Leone has held a solemn session at High Court No. 1 to honour three distinguished legal luminaries — former Acting Chief Justice Valesius Thomas, Berthan Macaulay Jnr. Esq., and Edward Bai Turay Esq. — whose contributions to the law and justice system continue to resonate across the nation.

The dignified ceremony brought together Justices, Magistrates, members of the Bar, court officials, family members, and well-wishers. It served as a moment of reflection and appreciation for eminent lawyers and jurists who dedicated their lives to upholding the rule of law.

In his opening remarks, Hon. Chief Justice Komba Kamanda described the occasion as “a sacred tradition of the court,” stressing that the legal profession is not merely a career but a calling rooted in service, integrity, and justice. He praised the honourees for leaving behind enduring legacies of excellence, discipline, and fairness.

Tributes were delivered by Justice Jamesina King, who honoured former Acting Chief Justice Valesius Thomas and Mr. Berthan Macaulay Jnr., and Justice S. O. Taylor, who paid tribute to Mr. Edward Bai Turay. The Law Officers Department described the sitting as a poignant reminder of life’s transience and the lasting impact of dedicated public service, noting that the late colleagues embodied professionalism, sound judgment, and deep respect for the rule of law.

Representatives of the Bar highlighted the honourees’ achievements, mentorship, and influence in shaping legal practice and inspiring younger lawyers. Family members expressed gratitude to the Judiciary for recognizing their loved ones, describing them as not only accomplished professionals but also devoted family members and pillars of their communities.

The solemn session featured prayers, a minute’s silence, and the formal presentation of tributes, underscoring the collective loss felt by the legal fraternity while celebrating lives of purpose and honour. A book of condolence was opened and signed by the Chief Justice, Justices of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, Magistrates, and lawyers.

The Judiciary emphasized that while great legal minds may pass on, their contributions remain embedded in the fabric of Sierra Leone’s justice system, guiding future generations of practitioners.
