Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary Hosts Environmental Competition for Schools

Sierra Leone — The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary has concluded a two-day Environmental Day programme for pupils enrolled in the Tacugama Kids Environmental Education (TKEEP) initiative, held on March 18 and 22, 2026.

The events, organized by the Sanctuary’s Community Outreach Department, brought together schools across the Western Area to participate in a series of competitions designed to promote environmental awareness and conservation. Activities included quizzes, drama performances, poetry recitals, spelling bees, and wildlife-themed games.

Participating schools included Rural Education Committee Primary School at Regent, Church of Christ Mountain Rural, Saio Primary, Logus Academy, Education For All School in Allen Town, Amazing Grace, Children in Crisis, and Abigail Butcher Primary School.

This year’s programme highlighted the Chimpanzee as Sierra Leone’s newly designated National Animal, celebrating the country’s unique distinction as the only nation in the world to honor the chimpanzee in this way. Pupils showcased their knowledge and creativity while reinforcing key lessons about wildlife conservation and sustainability.

Prizes such as certificates, backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, T-shirts, geometry sets, and water bottles were awarded to outstanding performers, serving both as recognition and motivation for continued engagement in environmental stewardship.

“The level of enthusiasm and participation was truly inspiring,” organizers noted, emphasizing that the initiative not only educated pupils but also fostered teamwork, confidence, and public speaking skills.

Tacugama Sanctuary confirmed that similar Environmental Day activities are being planned for schools in Sierra Leone’s Eastern region, ensuring more pupils benefit from the programme and continue to amplify the message of conservation.

The event underscored Tacugama’s commitment to inspiring young minds, promoting education, and advancing sustainability for a better future.
