Market chairladies from across the capital paid a surprise solidarity visit to the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, on Thursday morning, expressing appreciation for her continued support to traders despite her absence from office.
The delegation included representatives from Kroo Town Road, Congo Town Market, Ferry Junction Peace Market, Lumley Street Market, and other trading centers. The women commended the Mayor for the work she has done to improve conditions in their markets and assured her of their ongoing support.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr described the visit as “unexpected but lovely,” noting that it reaffirmed the bond between the city’s leadership and grassroots traders. She pledged to remain steadfast in her commitment to delivering for the people of Freetown.
She further emphasized that her work will continue with renewed momentum once concerns about electoral reforms raised by the All People’s Congress (APC) are addressed and all elected APC leaders resume their official duties.
The market women welcomed her warmly with songs of solidarity, reflecting their respect and affection for her leadership.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr concluded by reiterating her vision of turning hope into reality through unity and service, underscoring the importance of women’s solidarity in building a stronger Freetown.
