Pujehun, June 8, 2026 – The Government of Sierra Leone, in partnership with development allies, is set to complete the construction of two major hospitals in Zimmi and Kpakedu, Pujehun District, expanding healthcare access for thousands of residents living far from the district’s main hospital.
Each facility will have a 100‑bed capacity, easing pressure on existing health centres and improving service delivery in underserved communities.
Government Commitment
Speaking during the Civic Day Series in Pujehun, Deputy Minister of Health Professor Charles Senesie said the projects reflect President Julius Maada Bio’s directive to prioritize bold investments in healthcare infrastructure.
“This development is a direct result of the President’s instruction. He has encouraged us to be bold in our investments in healthcare infrastructure and ensure that quality healthcare services are accessible to all Sierra Leoneans,” Senesie stated.
Beyond Infrastructure
The Deputy Minister noted that government interventions extend beyond construction. Recent initiatives include:
- Introduction of vaccines for girls to prevent cervical cancer.
- Establishment of the district’s first dental unit.
- Continued supply of essential medicines under the Free Healthcare Initiative.
- Recruitment of 200 healthcare workers to strengthen service delivery.
He added that further recruitment and training are underway to meet growing demand, with capacity‑building efforts already contributing to improved health outcomes nationwide.
Tackling Maternal Mortality
Professor Senesie highlighted Sierra Leone’s progress in reducing maternal deaths, crediting investments in training and infrastructure. He underscored the government’s 300 Days of Activism initiative, aimed at achieving zero preventable maternal deaths.
“Sierra Leone is increasingly being recognised globally for the progress it has made in tackling maternal mortality. However, we are not satisfied with the gains achieved so far. We want to do more, which is why we have intensified our efforts. Our ultimate goal is to reduce maternal deaths to zero,” he said.
Impact on Pujehun
The completion of the Zimmi and Kpakedu hospitals is expected to transform healthcare access in Pujehun District, aligning with the government’s broader agenda of strengthening health services across Sierra Leone.
