Freetown, 11 June 2026 – The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has announced the receipt of its annual government subvention for 2026, amounting to SLE 2.7 million, while strongly reaffirming its independence and unwavering commitment to defending press freedom.
The subvention, first introduced by President Julius Maada Bio in 2018 as part of his pledge to support media development, has since been disbursed annually and subjected to independent audits by the Audit Service Sierra Leone. SLAJ emphasized that the funds are used strictly to sustain operations at national and regional levels, strengthen affiliate bodies, and implement key activities such as journalist safety and media freedom advocacy.
SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara clarified that elected officials managing the Association are volunteers who do not receive salaries from the subvention. He addressed public concerns that government support compromises independence, stressing that SLAJ is not a media house and does not control editorial policies.
“Our strategic partnership with the Government is focused solely on strengthening the media sector, enhancing professionalism, and promoting ethical journalism. This does not compromise our role in defending press freedom and holding institutions to account,” Kamara stated.
The Association underscored that its role is to create an enabling environment for media houses to investigate, report, and speak truth to power safely and responsibly. Membership remains voluntary, reflecting the diversity and strength of Sierra Leone’s journalism community.
SLAJ expressed gratitude to the Government, through the Ministry of Information and Civic Education and the Ministry of Finance, for continuing the support, while reassuring the public of its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the public good.
