ECOWAS Commissioner Meets Finance Minister Ahead of Freetown Summit

Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a show of deepening regional cooperation, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Macroeconomics and Economic Policy, Dr. Kalilou Sylla, has paid a courtesy call on Sierra Leone’s Minister of Finance, Hon. Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura, ahead of the 2026 ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit in Freetown.

The high-level engagement centered on advancing regional economic integration, strengthening macroeconomic stability, boosting intra-regional trade, accelerating digital payment systems, and reviewing progress on the ECOWAS Single Currency (ECO) Roadmap.

Dr. Sylla commended Sierra Leone’s leadership in hosting the summit and underscored the country’s growing role in regional economic affairs, remarking: “We can’t come to Sierra Leone without seeing the Minister of Finance.”

The visit highlighted the strong partnership between the ECOWAS Commission and Sierra Leone as the region intensifies efforts to deepen economic cooperation and monetary integration. Minister Bangura is expected to present the report of the 67th Meeting of the Committee of Governors of Central Banks of ECOWAS Member States to the Authority of Heads of State and Government, providing updates on monetary cooperation and the ECO roadmap.
