President Julius Maada Bio will on August 2, 2026, receive his Gabonese counterpart, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, in Freetown for a state visit that underscores the growing strength of bilateral ties between Sierra Leone and Gabon.
The visit follows President Bio’s December 2020 trip to Libreville, where he was warmly received by then‑President Ali Bongo Ondimba. That engagement focused on deepening cooperation in democratic consolidation, economic trade and investment, technological advancement, and education. During his tour of Gabon’s Special Economic Zone, President Bio explored major agricultural and industrial projects, including Arize IIP, and urged industry leaders to seize opportunities in Sierra Leone’s agriculture, mining, energy, technology, and telecommunications sectors.
Since then, President Bio has consistently advanced diplomatic friendship and economic partnership, while championing democratic governance across Africa. His leadership within ECOWAS, his influential role at the African Union, and his diplomatic clout at the United Nations have reinforced Sierra Leone’s voice on global platforms. As Chair of the AU’s Committee of Ten (C‑10) on UN Security Council reform, he has argued that Africa’s underrepresentation is not merely statistical but a profound historical injustice that must be corrected.
President Nguema’s visit marks his first trip to Sierra Leone since his constitutional election on May 3, 2025. He has pledged to unite Gabon, reform education, and tackle youth unemployment. His itinerary in Freetown includes tours of key tourist sites showcasing Sierra Leone’s natural endowments, as well as high‑level meetings with government officials and private sector leaders. The agenda reflects a shared commitment to strengthening democratic consolidation, expanding trade and investment, and advancing cooperation in agriculture.
This state visit symbolizes a renewed partnership built on shared values, aspirations, and social progress—anchoring Sierra Leone and Gabon as allies in governance, economic diversification, and regional development.
