Freetown, Sierra Leone – First Lady Fatima Maada Bio has called for a united continental movement to empower women and girls, as she officially launched the #BuildingResilience campaign under the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).
Speaking on her official Facebook page, Madam Bio reflected on her travels across Sierra Leone, where she met women whose daily struggles embody resilience. She recounted stories of mothers walking miles for clean water and young girls overcoming violence and poverty, yet still aspiring to become doctors and leaders.
“This is far more than another programme. It is a continental commitment,” she declared, emphasizing that the initiative seeks to guarantee every girl access to education, healthcare, protection, and opportunity—even in the most difficult circumstances.
The First Lady urged governments, development partners, civil society, the private sector, and citizens to become “architects of resilience,” investing not only in infrastructure but in human potential.
She stressed that empowering women strengthens families, communities, and nations:
“When women rise, communities prosper. When girls succeed, nations flourish. And when Africa’s women are resilient, Africa itself becomes unstoppable.”
Madam Bio underscored that history will not remember leaders for their speeches, but for the lives they transform. She called the launch “the beginning of a renewed continental movement—one that equips every woman and every girl to face the future with confidence, dignity, and hope.”
The #BuildingResilience campaign is expected to mobilize stakeholders across Africa to nurture resilience through opportunity, justice, and equality, positioning women as pillars of strength in national development.
