Freetown, September 2, 2026 – The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Foundation Diego González Rivas, has launched a free thoracoscopic and minimally invasive surgery programme at Connaught Hospital, running from September 1–4.
Led by Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby, the initiative underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to expanding access to advanced healthcare while strengthening the capacity of local professionals.
First Official Engagement for New CMO
Hospital Care Manager Dr. Ibrahim Mark Kapuwa welcomed newly appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr. med Mustapha Sundifu Kabba to his first official engagement, alongside international surgeon Dr. Diego González and his team. González recalled his team’s first mission to Sierra Leone four years ago, noting progress despite initial challenges with equipment and theatre infrastructure.
Mobile Operating Theatre
Dr. González highlighted the transformative role of the mobile operating theatre, a fully equipped surgical unit capable of supporting complex minimally invasive procedures. He explained that Sierra Leone’s cooperation and supportive environment influenced the decision to establish the country as a strategic base for the programme, following successful deployments in Ghana and Liberia.
Knowledge Transfer and Capacity Building
CMO Kabba expressed gratitude to the Foundation, stressing that the programme should serve not only patients but also as a platform for knowledge transfer. He urged Sierra Leonean surgeons, residents, and technicians to actively participate, with the long‑term goal of enabling local professionals to independently perform advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures.
Golden Opportunity for Healthcare
Connaught Hospital’s Senior Matron described the programme as a “golden opportunity,” urging health professionals to embrace specialization and ensure skills gained are transferred locally.
The Ministry of Health, through the Directorate of Hospital and Ambulance Services, reaffirmed its commitment to building strategic partnerships that expand specialized care, promote technology transfer, and position Sierra Leone as a growing hub for advanced surgical training in the region.
