Vatican City – President Julius Maada Bio has held high-level talks with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, focusing on peace, migration, food security, youth development and other pressing social challenges.

President Bio was received by the Pontiff before meeting with the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Under-Secretary for Relations with States, Monsignor Mihăiţă Blaj.

According to the Holy See Press Office, discussions centred on the cordial relations between Sierra Leone and the Holy See, with both sides acknowledging the Catholic Church’s contribution to Sierra Leone’s social and development efforts.

The talks also examined environmental and food-related emergencies linked to migration, as well as wider social challenges affecting communities. Particular emphasis was placed on the welfare and empowerment of young people.

The Vatican said both parties underscored the importance of promoting peace and advancing initiatives in education and sustainable development.

President Bio’s visit comes as Sierra Leone continues to strengthen international partnerships aimed at addressing youth unemployment, food insecurity, migration and other development concerns.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, according to the Holy See.

Describing the discussions as cordial, the Vatican reaffirmed the significance of the longstanding relationship between Sierra Leone and the Catholic Church.

The engagement marks a notable diplomatic milestone for Sierra Leone, bringing key national and regional development concerns to the highest levels of the Holy See and reinforcing cooperation on issues affecting vulnerable communities.
