President Julius Maada Bio has officially launched the Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company Limited, describing the move as a historic milestone in the country’s quest for greater economic independence and participation in global trade.
Speaking at the launch ceremony on Monday, President Bio said the establishment of the national shipping company represents a bold step towards strengthening Sierra Leone’s presence in international maritime commerce and reducing reliance on foreign carriers for the transportation of imports and exports.
“With immense pride, I officially launch the Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company Limited, a landmark moment for our nation,” President Bio declared.
He noted that for decades Sierra Leone has depended largely on international shipping lines to transport goods to and from global markets, a situation that limited the country’s direct participation in maritime trade and the economic benefits associated with it.
“For far too long, we have relied on international carriers to export and import our products. Today, we are taking a bold step forward, giving Sierra Leone a greater stake in transporting the goods we trade with the world,” he stated.
President Bio emphasized that the new shipping company forms part of his government’s broader agenda to diversify the economy, promote trade competitiveness and strengthen strategic national assets. He said the company is expected to enhance the country’s maritime capabilities, facilitate international commerce and create employment opportunities for Sierra Leoneans.
According to the President, the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to positioning Sierra Leone as an active player in the global shipping industry while leveraging the country’s coastal and maritime potential to drive economic growth.
He further noted that the shipping sector remains a critical component of international trade, with the vast majority of global goods transported by sea. As such, establishing a national shipping company would enable Sierra Leone to participate more meaningfully in the movement of goods across international markets.
The launch is expected to boost confidence within the maritime and logistics sectors, while also supporting exporters, importers and other business stakeholders through increased national involvement in shipping operations.
Observers say the creation of the Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company Limited could contribute to improving trade efficiency, expanding maritime services and strengthening the country’s economic resilience in the long term.
The launch marks another step in the government’s efforts to modernize critical sectors of the economy and advance Sierra Leone’s aspirations for sustainable development and greater integration into global trade networks.
“Today, Sierra Leone is not merely watching global trade pass by our shores. We are positioning ourselves to be active participants in moving our goods and connecting our economy to the world,” President Bio affirmed.
The establishment of the Sierra Leone Ocean Shipping Company Limited is being hailed as a strategic investment aimed at expanding national economic opportunities and reinforcing Sierra Leone’s role within the international maritime community.
