North-West Region, Sierra Leone — 27 October 2025: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has issued a strong warning to security personnel stationed at the Mile 38 checkpoint, urging them to desist from bribery and extortion or face legal consequences.

During an engagement held on 22 October 2025, ACC North-West Regional Director Zainab Othman addressed officers from the police, military, forestry department, and the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority. She emphasized that the ACC had received numerous complaints from citizens alleging corrupt practices at various checkpoints, including Mile 38.

“These acts not only violate the law but also erode public trust in our security institutions,” Director Othman stated. She warned that continued reports or evidence of misconduct would prompt sting operations to apprehend offenders. “There will be no safe haven for corrupt officers,” she declared.

The meeting aimed to reinforce transparency and accountability among law enforcement personnel. Director Othman reminded attendees that their duty is to serve the public, not exploit them.

Public Education Officer Mohamed Thullah elaborated on key offences under the Anti-Corruption Act of 2008, as amended in 2019. He highlighted crimes such as offering or soliciting bribes, misappropriation of public funds or property, abuse of office, and conspiracy to commit corruption-related offences. Thullah stressed the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct in curbing corruption.

Senior Public Education Officer Junisa Sankoh noted that the engagement was part of a broader awareness campaign to combat practices that undermine public confidence and security.

In response, Assistant Superintendent of Police Ansumana Fatorma expressed gratitude to the ACC and pledged support for the anti-corruption drive. Jonathan Kobba of the Road Safety Authority echoed similar sentiments, committing to uphold integrity in the discharge of duties.

The ACC’s outreach underscores its ongoing commitment to promoting clean governance and restoring public confidence in Sierra Leone’s security sector.
