African Bar Association Applauds President Bio’s ECOWAS Leadership, Endorses Engagement with Sahel States

Sierra Leone, August 22, 2025: The African Bar Association (AfBA) has formally commended ECOWAS Chairman and President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Julius Maada Bio, for his decisive leadership during a pivotal period for the regional bloc. In a letter signed by AfBA President, High Chief Ibrahim Eddie Mark, the association expressed strong support for President Bio’s efforts to foster dialogue and strengthen ties with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

The endorsement comes amid growing regional tensions following the withdrawal of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso from ECOWAS. These three Sahel nations, currently under military rule, have opted to consolidate their cooperation under the AES, raising concerns about regional unity and stability.

AfBA praised President Bio’s commitment to reconciliation and diplomacy, describing his leadership as “timely and necessary.” The association warned that mishandling the withdrawal could jeopardize decades of progress in regional integration, economic development, and security cooperation.

“The withdrawal of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso from ECOWAS, if not properly handled, will jeopardize decades of hard-earned progress,” the letter stated, urging President Bio to prioritize negotiation over punitive measures.

While reaffirming its opposition to unconstitutional changes of government, AfBA emphasized the need for a citizen-centered approach. “We cannot condone military takeovers; however, punishing the people of these countries with blanket sanctions only deepens the divide and worsens insecurity,” the association cautioned.

AfBA pledged its readiness to collaborate with ECOWAS under President Bio’s stewardship, offering legal and advisory support to promote good governance and the rule of law across the region.

“The crisis in the Sahel calls for statesmanship and constructive dialogue,” the letter noted. “As the African Bar Association, we stand prepared to support mediation efforts and provide legal and advisory backing.”

The association’s message underscores a growing consensus that inclusive dialogue and pragmatic diplomacy are essential to bridging divides and safeguarding regional stability.
