APC Aspirant Decries Detention of Zainab Sheriff

Sierra Leone – February 23, 2026:  Dr. Richard Konteh, a leading aspirant for the All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer, has expressed concern over the arrest and detention of popular actress, model, and political activist Zainab Sheriff, widely known as Mami Na Pawa. Sheriff was taken into custody on Friday, February 20, 2026, and spent the weekend at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

According to police sources, Sheriff had earlier been declared wanted on allegations of incitement and threatening language. The charges stem from remarks she allegedly made during an APC rally at Attouga Mini Stadium, which authorities claim were provocative and capable of inciting unrest.

In a public statement, Dr. Konteh criticized the circumstances surrounding her detention, stressing that due process and constitutional rights must be upheld. He emphasized that freedom of expression, access to bail, and transparency in legal proceedings are fundamental rights in a democracy, not privileges granted by the state.

“Law enforcement should never be perceived as a tool to intimidate, silence, or discourage dissenting voices. A democracy grows stronger when it tolerates criticism and manages disagreement through dialogue and lawful process—not fear,” Konteh said.

He urged authorities to ensure Sheriff’s access to legal counsel, clarity on charges, and consideration of bail in line with established standards. Konteh also warned against a growing pattern of arrests targeting activists and opposition voices, arguing that such practices shrink civic space and deepen political polarization.

Sheriff’s detention has sparked debate across Sierra Leone’s political landscape, with supporters calling for her release and critics urging restraint in political rhetoric. The case highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement and opposition figures ahead of the country’s heated political season.
