Sierra Leone — February 24, 2026: The All People’s Congress (APC) has strongly rejected the proposed appointment of Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone, warning that the move undermines the Agreement for National Unity and threatens to derail ongoing electoral reforms.
Party Position
In a statement issued by its National Advisory Committee (NAC), the APC described the appointment as a “direct assault” on the Tripartite reform process and a dangerous attempt to re-entrench the disputed electoral status quo. The party emphasized that its return to governance structures, including Parliament and Local Councils, was strictly based on commitments made under the Agreement for National Unity, which established the Tripartite Committee and its reform recommendations.
The APC highlighted concerns about Mr. Alpha’s credibility, his conduct following the 2023 elections, and his posture toward international observers. The party argued that proceeding with his appointment risks recycling contested electoral authority rather than rebuilding institutional trust, thereby undermining confidence in future elections.
The NAC pointed to Recommendation 36 of the Tripartite Committee, which calls for amending Section 32(3) of the 1991 Constitution to establish an independent Search and Nomination Committee for vetting candidates for Chief Electoral Commissioner. The APC urged government to conclude the amendment process and enact the relevant clauses before making any appointment to the office.
Ultimatum Issued
The APC has demanded that the government rescind the appointment within 48 hours. Failing this, all APC elected officials will withdraw their participation from Parliament, Local Councils, and other governance structures nationwide. The party reserved the right to pursue further lawful and democratic measures consistent with the Constitution.
Despite its strong opposition, the APC reiterated its commitment to peaceful, lawful, and principled action in defense of constitutional governance, electoral integrity, and the sovereign will of the people of Sierra Leone.
