Freetown, January 8, 2026: The Ballanta Academy of Music and Performing Arts (BAMPA) has honoured internationally acclaimed young vocalist Malakai Bayoh at a special ceremony held at the Academy in Freetown.

The event drew prominent figures from Sierra Leone’s music and creative arts industry, including voice tutor and music director Double King, Pastor Jeremiah Sesay, members of BAMPA, and celebrated artist Drizilik. The highlight of the evening was Malakai’s moving rendition of Ave Maria, which earned him resounding gratitude from the audience.

Speaking at the ceremony, Magdalene Bayoh, Malakai’s mother, recounted his unexpected journey into music. She explained that Malakai initially worked as a photographer and videographer for his elder sister, who performed at schools and public events, before gradually developing an interest in singing. His first solo performance at a BCC Christmas Special revealed his natural talent and marked the beginning of his rapid rise.

Since then, Malakai has performed on various platforms locally and internationally, appeared in film and television productions including Netflix projects, and is expected to feature in an upcoming animated movie. His growing reputation attracted invitations from America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent, where he earned the Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell, propelling him to global recognition.

Magdalene credited her son’s success to his passion, discipline, and determination, while also acknowledging the mentorship of Dr. Julius Spencer, Chairman of BAMPA, who she said has supported many Sierra Leoneans in the arts.

In his address, Dr. Spencer congratulated Malakai, describing him as a “global superstar for his age.” He urged the young singer to combine talent with discipline and consistency, reminding him to remain proud of his Sierra Leonean roots.

Malakai expressed heartfelt gratitude to BAMPA and the people of Sierra Leone for the honour. “I am very happy to be honoured in my homeland, and I am excited to be in Sierra Leone,” he said, noting that his journey began at age seven, inspired by his sister. He praised BAMPA for its role in nurturing Sierra Leonean talent.
