NEW YORK, USA – September 22, 2026: President Julius Maada Bio has paid tribute to the United Nations for its unwavering support to Sierra Leone’s recovery journey, highlighting the global body’s contribution to disarmament, democratic elections and long-term peacebuilding efforts following the country’s civil war.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, President Bio said Sierra Leone’s transformation from conflict to stability remains a powerful example of what effective international cooperation can achieve.
“The United Nations stood with us through disarmament, elections and the long work of peacebuilding,” he said, noting that Sierra Leone’s experience demonstrates the tangible benefits of sustained global solidarity and partnership.
The President stressed that Sierra Leone understands the value of multilateral cooperation because of its own history and the support it received from the international community during some of its most challenging moments.
“We know what international cooperation can make possible because we have lived it,” Bio declared.
He reflected on the country’s post-war recovery process, emphasizing that peace was not achieved through words alone but through consistent commitment, collaboration and investment in rebuilding institutions and restoring public confidence.
According to the President, Sierra Leone emerged stronger because national efforts were complemented by international assistance aimed at fostering democracy, stability and sustainable development.
Bio said the lessons learned from Sierra Leone’s experience remain relevant today as countries confront conflicts, political instability and growing global uncertainty. He noted that the country’s progress serves as a reminder that when nations work together and honour their commitments, lasting peace can be achieved.
The President reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations and called for renewed global cooperation to tackle shared challenges facing humanity.
