Freetown, Sierra Leone – June 30, 2026: Declaring that “judicial independence and accountability are the bedrock of democracy,” Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, Honourable Justice Komba Kamanda, has launched a three-day training programme for High Court Judges at Brookfields Hotel. The initiative, he said, is designed to strengthen the competence, integrity, and professionalism of the Judiciary while reinforcing public trust in the justice system.
Speaking at the opening ceremony at Brookfields Hotel, Chief Justice Kamanda described the training as part of ongoing reforms to enhance judicial competence and professionalism while reinforcing public trust in the justice system. He emphasized that professional development is essential to ensuring judges remain independent, accountable, and responsive to evolving demands of justice.
The programme covers a wide range of contemporary issues, including the Rule of Law, Separation of Powers, Judicial Independence, Cybersecurity for Judges, Modern Statutory Interpretation, Judges and Social Media, and case management challenges.
“This training will strengthen our analytical skills and help us think outside the box in addressing complex legal issues and the evolving challenges confronting the Judiciary,” Chief Justice Kamanda stated.
The event also featured international contributions. In a pre-recorded presentation, former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Thomas, highlighted the Rule of Law as fundamental to economic prosperity, democratic governance, and societal stability. He stressed the importance of the Separation of Powers in safeguarding constitutional democracy.
Retired UK Judge, Honourable Dame Linda Dobbs, delivered insights on judicial ethics, independence, and accountability, including the challenges posed by judges’ use of social media. Professor Richard Honey presented on the role of judges in a democracy, outlining essential judicial qualities such as integrity, impartiality, independence, diligence, humility, and sound temperament.
The Judiciary of Sierra Leone reaffirmed its commitment to reforms that strengthen efficiency, integrity, and credibility, ensuring that the justice system remains transparent, impartial, and accountable.
