CAAT Refutes Claims in Viral Video, Reveals Young Woman Was Drugged with Ecstasy, Not Alcohol

FREETOWN—The Consortium of Civil Society & Media Alliance on Alcohol & Tobacco (CAAT) has strongly condemned what it calls a deliberate attempt to misrepresent facts and tarnish the reputation of a reputable alcohol company operating in Sierra Leone.

In a press statement issued by CAAT Chairman M.S. Biro, the Alliance reaffirmed its dedication to promoting responsible alcohol and tobacco consumption while protecting the public from misinformation and exploitation.

The statement follows the circulation of a viral video depicting a young woman in a helpless state, with widespread claims suggesting she was heavily intoxicated by alcohol. However, CAAT’s fact-finding investigation has revealed that the woman was allegedly under the influence of the synthetic drug Ecstasy—not alcohol.

Findings from the Investigation

CAAT, citing credible sources, confirmed that:

  • The young woman’s condition was due to Ecstasy, not alcohol.
  • The implicated company remains fully compliant with national alcohol production regulations.
  • There is evidence suggesting a coordinated attempt to damage the company’s reputation for extortion purposes.
  • The alcohol brand seen in the footage may have been misrepresented or used in a staged manner.
  • Feedback from regular customers contradicts the allegations made in the viral video.

The Alliance expressed concern over what it views as a deliberate effort to extort money from the company’s employees and malign its image for personal gain.

Recommendations and Response

In response, CAAT issued several key recommendations:

  • Youth should practice responsible alcohol consumption and remain aware of the risks of excessive drinking.
  • Individuals must exercise personal accountability and moderation in substance use.
  • The Alliance strongly condemns blackmail and defamation against local investors, warning that such acts undermine economic development and job creation.
  • Young people are urged to avoid harmful substances, particularly synthetic drugs like Ecstasy.

CAAT also reminded the public that regulatory bodies rigorously monitor the production practices of licensed alcohol producers. It emphasized that while violations are dealt with accordingly, baseless accusations against compliant businesses unfairly target responsible regulatory institutions and national employment efforts.

As part of its advocacy mission, CAAT pledged to provide psychosocial counseling support to the young woman in the video. Additionally, the group plans to launch a nationwide awareness campaign focused on drug abuse prevention and responsible alcohol consumption.
