Chief Electoral Commissioner Arrives in Cairo for Continental Forum

Cairo — The Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leone in Cairo on Sunday, 5 July 2026, welcomed senior officials of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) ahead of their participation in the 10th Annual Continental Forum of Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and the Association of African Electoral Authorities (AAEA) General Assembly. The event runs from 6–8 July 2026 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Sierra Leone delegation is led by Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman, National Returning Officer, Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha, accompanied by the Director of External Relations, Albert Massaquoi, Esq. Their attendance follows an invitation from the African Union Commission (AUC).

Organised by the AUC’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (DPAPS) in collaboration with the AAEA and hosted by Egypt’s National Elections Authority, the forum is convened under the theme: “Diaspora (Residents Abroad) Voting: Progress, Gaps and Prospects.”

The high-level meeting brings together senior election officials from across Africa to explore innovative policy approaches for strengthening credible, peaceful, and democratic electoral processes. Discussions will focus on election management, stakeholder engagement, effective communication, and measures to enhance electoral governance across the continent.

Albert Massaquoi, Esq. emphasized Sierra Leone’s commitment to electoral excellence, noting: “Sierra Leone’s participation underscores the Electoral Commission’s dedication to strengthening institutional capacity and contributing to continental efforts to advance democratic governance.”

The delegation is expected to play an active role in both the forum and the AAEA General Assembly, reinforcing Sierra Leone’s position in supporting credible, transparent, and inclusive elections across Africa.
