Freetown—During a diplomatic engagement at the Chinese Embassy in Freetown on June 12, 2025, Chinese Ambassador His Excellency Wang Qing praised Chief Justice Komba Kamanda for his swift and impactful reforms within Sierra Leone’s judiciary.

“I’m impressed with your reforms in just 200 days of your leadership as the Honourable Chief Justice of this country,” Ambassador Wang stated.

Highlighting key improvements, Wang  noted the restructuring of the Bailiffs Department, emphasizing that no execution shall proceed without approval from Supervisory Judges. The Ambassador commended Kamanda for these efforts, recognizing their significance in ensuring transparency and efficiency in judicial operations.

Expanding Access to Justice

Under Kamanda’s leadership, judicial services have expanded into remote communities, with the employment of additional Magistrates and Judges. Notably, High Court sittings in Pujehun District resumed after a two-year hiatus, further strengthening access to justice.

Additionally, the Chief Justice has revised the Adoption Order process, ensuring that only the Master and Registrar sign the final order, eliminating previous practices that allowed Court Registrars to approve adoption orders.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Expressing gratitude, Chief Justice Kamanda thanked the Chinese Ambassador on behalf of the judiciary, acknowledging China’s long-standing support, which has included landmark infrastructure projects such as the National Stadium and healthcare initiatives.

“Our core mandate is to administer justice fairly and without favour,” Kamanda asserted, while acknowledging the serious challenges faced by the judiciary. He called on the Chinese government to extend its support, helping the judiciary fully achieve its mandate.

Judicial Delegation & Ongoing Partnerships

The event also featured statements from Justices of the Superior Court of Judicature, reinforcing the significance of bilateral partnerships between Sierra Leone and China.
